Petererson Peaks Against West Virginia

SOME HITHER, OTHERS LSU cornerback.punt returner Patrick Peterson delivered a punt 60 yards for a touchdown on Saturday night against West Virginia and stopped in the end zone to strike that familiar Heisman Trophy pose. It drew a 15-yard penalty for excessive celebration, but in December that yellow flag could turn onto a Heisman Trophy. "The attention he received for that will be off the charts," LSU assistant sports information director told the Shreveport Times. " We've had a 'Peterson for Heisman' promotional in the works for since the spring. We've just been waiting to really start it." Why the wait? Peterson faces long odds as a defensive back and no defensive player has won the Heisman since Michigan's Charles Woodson edged Peyton Manning for the award 13 years ago...
In the win over West Virginia, Peterson had one tackle two punt returns for 86 yards and a touchdown. For the season, he has 11 tackles, two passes defended, two interceptions, one blocked kick, nine punt returns for 253 yards and two touchdowns, and six kick returns for 190 yards. Peterson is the only player in the country to rank in the top 15 in yards per punt return (28.1), and kick returns (31.6), but without a role on offense like Woodson had, it's not likely that his defensive and return stats will be enough to win a Heisman. Maybe Les Miles can try him at quarterback or receiver. The Heisman promotion is now under way...
