LSU Tigers Baseball History and Facts
The University first fielded a baseball team in 1895 and without a manager at the
helm, posted an 0-3-1 record.
Harry Rabenhorst was a key to Tigers baseball growth.  He took over the program in
1927 (also coached basketball) and coached until 1942.  After serving in WWII,
Rabenhorst returned to the diamond and coached the Tigers from 1946 until 1956.
The Tiger skipper was a two-time SEC Manager of the Year and later served as the
school's athletic director.
LSU baseball emerged as a national power when Skip Bertman arrived on campus for
the 1984 season after managing the Miami Hurricanes to a national championship.
Within his third season at the managing helm, Bertman had the Tigers making their
first CWS appearance.  During his 18 years as the team's manager, Bertman led LSU
to 11 College World Series while winning 5 national championships.  The Tigers
legendary skipper posted an 870-330-3 record at LSU.
Tigers manager Paul Mainieri helped LSU regain its championship status in 2009
when he guided the purple and gold to a 2009 CWS title in just his third season with
the program.
LSU's baseball home is Alex Box Stadium.  The new Alex Box Stadium opened in
2009 as a replacement for the original Alex Box Stadium that served the school for
decades.  LSU's new ballpark seats 10,150 fans and LSU draws the top baseball
crowds in the nation.  Alex Box Stadium is named for a former Tigers Baseball player
(1938 letterman) who was killed in action in World War II.
When it comes to LSU baseball, it's all about the magic created by a great championship tradition and a fan base that ranks
#1 in the nation in attendance.
